My first Water Color...

Hey Guys!!  I hope everyone's having a great week!  No pink today.  I tried a pretty pink water marble yesterday and I totally screwed it up.  I used a few Essie's and I'm thinking they don't play well with water marbling (for me anyway).  Anyhow, the failed attempt at water marbling put me in a fowl mood, so I didn't even do a mani yesterday.. which screwed up my entire week. ;)

So, today I have a technique to show you that I've been wanting to try for a long time.  It's Water Color Nails!!  I followed these instructions from Rebecca Likes Nails and I don't think they turned out too bad. (Well, this is my 2nd attempt, I removed my first attempt because it looked too "watery.")

Here are the polishes I used for this manicure:
L to R: OPI Alpine Snow, OPI Sparrow Me the Drama, Zoya Bevin, Ulta Tutu Cute, and Ulta  Bam-Blue-Zled
Acetone acts as the "water" in a water marble.  Instead of dipping your brush in water (like back in pre-school), you dip your brush in acetone to created the watery effect, but be careful not to use too much acetone, or you'll have a mess.

You'll want to start with a few coats of a white (or light) polish AND a thick coat or two of a topcoat.. I used Poshe.  The topcoat is important as it protects the base color from the acetone.  Then you start with your first color, add about two drops of polish to each nail, dip your brush (oh yeah, I forgot to mention you'll need a bigger nail brush) in the acetone, dab it on a paper towel first, then start dabbing on your polish to create the Water Color Look... Continue doing this with each color.  (Just be sure to follow Rebecca's directions)

Here's my first Water Color:

Ahh, I apologize for my dry cuticles. Acetone is The Devil!!  I hate it, but I had to use it for this.  I should have applied some cuticle oil before taking pics.. oopsie.  I'm not in love with this manicure.  When I try it again, I'll use bolder colors.  I still feel like I don't have the amount of acetone that should be used figured out yet, but I'll get there.  I don't think this is too bad for my first try (well, second).

Have you tried Water Color Nails yet?  What colors did you use?

Dugan says "hi."  We took a walk today.. It was 55* here today and it's only January :)

  1. This looks great! I just tried this look out a few days ago, and I liked it, but I think I'll enjoy it more in the spring, or with bolder colors like you suggested! Great job =)

  2. I love this! I wonder what it would look like with different shades of the same color, like purples or blues.
